Spel’s Historias de Flores

Girl faces, spraycan with ink on paper, 8 X 10 inches

Last year, HEM crew member Spel Uno moved to Guadalajara to keep his job at the graphic design company he was working for. Quickly he realized that long commutes and demanding work days left him little time for his creative work.

And so, he quit his job and turned to painting, drawing and developing his work, and the results are stunning.

He’s been working in multiple media, painting murals in the street and working on paintings on canvas and paper, developing his work on female figures, using spraycan and ink on paper.

From group show of HEM Crew in November 2011. Girl Faces, acrylic with coffee and flowers. 12 X 18 inches.

He’s preparing new works for a show called “Historias de Flores” opening April 21, 2012 in Galeria Ajolote Arte Contemporanea, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

I met Spel in his studio in downtown Guadalajara this week and we talked briefly about the development of his ideas of androgyny and power.
